Early Life

Bernd Hölzenbein was born in 1946 in Germany and grew to become one of the most celebrated footballers in the country’s history. He began his career as a qualified merchant before making his professional debut in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1967. Hölzenbein quickly established himself as a key player for the club, showcasing his skills as a striker and winger.

Career

Hölzenbein's time at Eintracht Frankfurt spanned from 1967 to 1981, during which he became the club's all-time top scorer in the Bundesliga, netting an impressive 160 goals in 420 matches. His contributions helped the team secure three DFB-Pokal titles in 1974, 1975, and 1981, as well as the prestigious UEFA Cup in 1980. After leaving Frankfurt, he ventured to the United States, playing for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Memphis Americans, and Baltimore Blast in the North American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League.

On the international stage, Hölzenbein represented West Germany from 1973 to 1978, earning 40 caps and scoring five goals. He was a vital member of the West German squad that triumphed in the 1974 FIFA World Cup, famously being fouled in the final, which led to the equalizing penalty. He also played in the UEFA Euro 1976 Final, where he became the oldest player to score in a Euro final at the age of 30.

Hölzenbein's legacy is marked by his remarkable achievements on the field, including his induction into the kicker Bundesliga Team of the Season in 1976 and receiving the Hessian Order of Merit. His impact on German football remains significant, and he is remembered as a true icon of the sport.
