João Carlos's professional career took off at Democrata Futebol Clube, where he played from 1992 to 1994. He then moved to Cruzeiro E.C., where he had a significant impact from 1994 to 1999, contributing to the team's success. His time at S.C. Corinthians Paulista from 1999 to 2001 was particularly fruitful, as he helped the club secure the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title in 1999 and the FIFA Club World Championship in 2000. He also had a brief stint with the Brazil national team, participating in the 1999 Copa América held in Paraguay.
