Budapest Honvéd FC, originally founded as Kispesti AC in 1909, is a prominent Hungarian sports club based in Kispest, Budapest. The club, which is best known for its football team, adopted the name Kispest FC in 1926 before reverting to Kispest Honvéd in 1944. The name "Honvéd" translates to "Homeland Defence," reflecting the club's deep-rooted connection to Hungarian national pride.

Early Success and Development

The club made its debut in the top tier of Hungarian football, the Nemzeti Bajnokság I, during the 1916–17 season. Their first major achievement came in 1926 when they won the Magyar Kupa by defeating Budapesti EAC in the final. Over the years, Honvéd established itself as a dominant force in Hungarian football, securing numerous league titles and cup victories.

Achievements and Legacy

Budapest Honvéd FC has won the Nemzeti Bajnokság I a remarkable 14 times, with their most recent triumph in the 2016–17 season. They also have a rich history in the Magyar Kupa, having lifted the trophy eight times. Internationally, the club reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1978–79 season and won the Mitropa Cup in 1959. Despite facing relegation to the second division in 2003, Honvéd has continued to be a significant player in Hungarian football, nurturing young talent through its youth teams, which have won the Puskás Cup five times between 2010 and 2016.
