Celuloza Călărași (1962–1979)

Football in Călărași dates back to 1919, when the amateur club Ialomița Călărași was established. During the following decades, other local teams such as Tricolorul, Venus, FC Călărași and Energia contributed to the development of the sport in the city. This evolution eventually led to the establishment of Celuloza Călărași in 1962, the first local club to achieve a sustained presence in the national football league system. Celuloza initially competed in the Bucharest Regional Championship. At the end of the 1967–68 season, the club won the East Series and earned promotion to Divizia C. In its first third-division campaign, Celuloza finished 11th in Series III of the 1968–69 season. The team subsequently improved, finishing 5th in 1969–70, 9th in 1970–71 and again 5th in 1971–72. The breakthrough came in 1972–73, when Celuloza won Series V and was promoted to Divizia B for the first time, finishing eight points ahead of Autobuzul București. The club adapted reasonably well to the second tier, finishing 11th in its first Divizia B season, followed by 8th place in 1974–75 and 11th in 1975–76. Celuloza narrowly avoided relegation in 1976–77, finishing 14th, but was unable to survive the following campaign and dropped back to Divizia C after finishing 15th in 1977–78. The club attempted an immediate return but finished only 4th in 1978–79.
