Gaviria's professional career spanned from 1990 to 2002, during which he played for several clubs, including Atlético Nacional, Deportes Tolima, Deportivo Cali, Atlético Bucaramanga, and Shonan Bellmare in Japan's J2 League. He had notable success with Atlético Nacional, winning the Campeonato Colombiano twice in 1991 and 1994, and the Copa Interamericana in 1995. His time at Deportivo Cali also saw him lift the Campeonato Colombiano in 1998 and reach the finals of the Copa Libertadores in 1999.

On the international front, Gaviria represented the Colombia men's national football team from 1993 to 1999, earning 27 caps and scoring 3 goals. He participated in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where he scored twice, and played in three editions of the Copa América, achieving third-place finishes in 1993 and 1995. Gaviria was also part of the squad for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where he scored in a crucial match against Switzerland.
