Early Life and Playing Career

Horst Köppel is a former German football player and manager, known for his impactful career in both roles. Born in Germany, he began his football journey with the national under-15 team in 1962, progressing through the ranks to the under-18 and under-23 teams. Köppel made his professional debut with VfB Stuttgart, where he played from 1966 to 1968, before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he enjoyed significant success from 1968 to 1971 and again from 1973 to 1979. During his time in the Bundesliga, he scored a total of 83 goals, showcasing his talent as a forward. He also represented the West Germany national team, earning 11 caps between 1968 and 1973, and was part of the squad that won UEFA Euro 1972.

Managerial Career

After retiring as a player, Köppel transitioned into management, taking on various roles at clubs across Germany and beyond. His managerial career began with Arminia Bielefeld in 1982, followed by stints at Bayer 05 Uerdingen, Borussia Dortmund, and Fortuna Düsseldorf. He also had international experience, managing Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan and Al-Wahda FC in the UAE. Notably, he returned to Borussia Dortmund as a manager for their second team and later took charge of Borussia Mönchengladbach's reserve side before briefly serving as caretaker manager of the senior team. His managerial tenure at Borussia Mönchengladbach culminated in a challenging period, leading to his departure in 2006.
