Early Life

Julián Estiven Vélez Upegui was born in Medellín, Colombia, where he began his journey in football. He developed his skills in the youth ranks of Atlético Nacional, a prominent club in Colombian football, which laid the foundation for his professional career.

Career

Vélez made his professional debut in 2004 with Deportes Quindío, a team in the Categoría Primera B. His talent quickly caught the attention of larger clubs, and in 2006, he joined Deportivo Pereira. The following year, he signed with Atlético Nacional, where he was part of the squad that won the 2007 Finalización, marking a significant achievement in his early career.

In 2010, Vélez took a bold step by moving to South Korea to play for Ulsan Hyundai. His time there was marked by success, culminating in winning the 2012 AFC Champions League, where he played a crucial role in the final match against Al-Ahli. After a brief stint with Jeju SK FC and Tokushima Vortis in Japan, he retired from professional football after the 2014–15 season.

International Career

On the international stage, Vélez represented the Colombia national team from 2006 to 2008, making his debut in 2006 and participating in the 2007 Copa America. His contributions to the national team further solidified his reputation as a skilled midfielder and defender.
