Formation

Clube Desportivo Santa Clara, based in Ponta Delgada on the Azores island of Portugal, is a professional football club that has made a significant mark in Portuguese football. Founded in the late 20th century, Santa Clara quickly established itself as the most successful football team from the Azores Islands. The club's journey began in earnest when they reached the Primeira Liga for the first time in the 1998–99 season, although they faced immediate relegation after finishing last.

Breakthrough

The club rebounded by winning the Segunda Liga in the 2000–01 season under the management of Manuel Fernandes, who later returned to the club after a brief stint with Sporting CP. Santa Clara's first taste of European competition came in 2002 when they were selected to participate in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, where they achieved a notable victory against Armenia's Shirak FC before being eliminated by FK Teplice. After a challenging period in the second tier, the club returned to the Primeira Liga in 2018, finishing second in the Segunda Liga.

Recent Success

Under the management of João Henriques, Santa Clara achieved consecutive 10th-placed finishes in the Primeira Liga, marking their best results in terms of position and points. The club continued to build on this success, finishing sixth in the 2020–21 season, which allowed them to qualify for the inaugural UEFA Conference League. This marked a new era for Santa Clara, showcasing their growth and ambition on the European stage.

Santa Clara has not only made history as the only team from the Azores to compete in UEFA competitions but has also secured multiple honors, including two Segunda Liga titles and a Portuguese Second Division B title.
