The Columbus Crew, an American professional soccer club based in Columbus, Ohio, was established as one of the ten founding members of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996. The team was initially named the Columbus Eclipse during its application process, inspired by a solar eclipse that had recently passed over the city. However, a public contest to name the team resulted in the selection of "the Crew," a name that linked to the city's namesake, Christopher Columbus, and his voyages. The team's first crest featured three shadowed figures in hard hats, symbolizing the construction workers and the Midwestern work ethic, reflecting the club's roots in the community.

Early Years and Ownership

The Crew began their inaugural season with notable players such as South African national team veteran Doctor Khumalo and American forward Brian McBride. The club was initially owned by MLS investor Lamar Hunt and his son Clark, who also owned the Kansas City Wizards. Over the years, the Crew has seen changes in ownership, with the current ownership group led by the Haslam family and former team physician Pete Edwards, marking the third ownership group in the club's history.
