1919–1975: early years

Founded in 1919, the original Drogheda United were a non-league club playing junior football in County Louth. The club entered the Dundalk & District League for the 1919–1920 season, and were champions within two years. They initially played their games in Magdalene Park, before moving to the Showgrounds and then finally on to United Park in 1927. A separate football club called Drogheda F.C. was founded in 1962 and played in Lourdes Stadium. The following year, on 22 June 1963, they were elected to the nationwide League of Ireland when the league was expanded to include twelve teams, up from ten. Unable to finish outside the bottom three during their first four seasons, they achieved a respectable fifth-place in the 1967–68 season. This was followed by a sixth place finish the following season but the club dropped down the table again when the league expanded to include fourteen teams in 1969. The club continued to struggle in the league, finishing in the bottom five in each of the next six seasons and also recording their heaviest league defeat, an 8–1 loss to Cork Hibernians, in the 1970–71 season. They did, however, get to an FAI Cup final that same season where they were beaten 3–0 by Limerick in a replay after the first match ended 0-0.

1975–2003

In 1975, Drogheda F.C. amalgamated with Drogheda United to form Drogheda United F.C. and the clubs agreed to play out of United Park once the ground had been redeveloped. The 1975–76…
