Early years (1909-1954)
In 1868, a sports club called the Fencing and Physical Education Association was founded in the city of Nitra by Július Gisser. In 1909, Július Gisser's son, Augustín Gisser, established a football section within the already restructured sports club, which by then was known as the Nitra Fencing and Physical Education Association (Hungarian: Nyitrai Torna és Vívó Egylet), abbreviated as Nyitrai TVE. Around the same time, the city's firefighters, led by Oskar Ronchetti, founded the Nitra Volunteer Firefighters' Association (Hungarian: Nyitrai Önkéntes Tűzoltó Testület Sportosztálya), abbreviated as Nyitrai ÖTTSO.
