Early years (1909-1954)

In 1868, a sports club called the Fencing and Physical Education Association was founded in the city of Nitra by Július Gisser. In 1909, Július Gisser's son, Augustín Gisser, established a football section within the already restructured sports club, which by then was known as the Nitra Fencing and Physical Education Association (Hungarian: Nyitrai Torna és Vívó Egylet), abbreviated as Nyitrai TVE. Around the same time, the city's firefighters, led by Oskar Ronchetti, founded the Nitra Volunteer Firefighters' Association (Hungarian: Nyitrai Önkéntes Tűzoltó Testület Sportosztálya), abbreviated as Nyitrai ÖTTSO. The first opponents of the two football teams were mainly clubs from nearby towns and cities, as well as teams from Vienna and Budapest. During the First World War, both clubs curtailed their sporting activities. After the war, members of the two clubs formed a new club called the Nitra Sports Club (Hungarian: Nyitrai Sport Club), abbreviated as Nyitrai SC. In 1921, the club adopted its first Slovak name, Sport Club Nitra (Slovak: Športový klub Nitra), commonly abbreviated as ŠK Nitra. The club subsequently competed in an organised league within the Czechoslovak Football Association. However, other football clubs continued to exist in the city, largely reflecting its ethnic and religious divisions.
