Formation

FC Thun, officially known as Fussballclub Thun 1898, was founded on May 1, 1898, in the picturesque town of Thun, located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. The club initially played in the second division, known as the Nationalliga B, from 1946 to 1950 and again during the 1953–54 season. Their first significant achievement came at the end of the 1953–54 season when they finished second in the league, earning promotion to the Nationalliga A, the top tier of Swiss football, for the first time in their history. However, their stay in the top division was short-lived as they were relegated after just one season.

Rise and Challenges

Throughout the late 1950s to the 1970s, FC Thun oscillated between the Nationalliga B and the Swiss 1. Liga, facing challenges that kept them from solidifying their position in the top tier. A turning point came in 1995 when Andy Egli took over as manager. Under his leadership, the club regained promotion to the Nationalliga B in 1997 after a long absence. The club continued to strive for success, and in 2001, they achieved promotion to the Nationalliga A after 47 years, marking a significant comeback.

Recent Achievements

In recent years, FC Thun has made notable strides, including winning the Swiss Challenge League in the 2009–10 and 2024–25 seasons. They also finished as runners-up in the Swiss Super League in the 2004–05 season and reached the Swiss Cup finals in 1954–55 and 2018–19. The club's colors are red and white, and they play their home matches at the Stockhorn Arena, which accommodates 10,000 fans. FC Thun continues to be a prominent name in Swiss football, showcasing resilience and ambition in their pursuit of success.
