Zimbru Chișinău was formed in 1947 in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (present day Moldova). 'Zimbru' is a Romanian word for European bison, but the club also previously functioned under names such as Dinamo, Burevestnik, Moldova, Avântul, and Nistru.
