Career

Schäfer's professional journey began with 1. FC Köln, where he played from 1948 to 1965. As a midfielder, he made a significant impact on the team, contributing to their success in the Bundesliga and winning the German football championship in 1962. His prowess on the field earned him a spot on the West Germany national team, where he played from 1952 to 1962, earning 39 caps and scoring 15 goals. Notably, he participated in three FIFA World Cups: 1954, 1958, and 1962, and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in 1954, scoring four goals during the tournament.

In addition to his World Cup achievements, Schäfer captained the national team 16 times between 1957 and 1962, showcasing his leadership skills. He was recognized for his talent when he was voted German Footballer of the Year in 1963, at the age of 35. After a successful career, he retired from professional football following the inaugural seasons of the Bundesliga, where he played 39 matches and scored 20 goals.
