Hisao Kami

Early Life

Hisao Kami was born on June 28, 1941, in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. He developed a passion for football early in life, which led him to pursue the sport seriously after graduating from high school.

Career

Kami began his professional career in 1960 when he joined Yawata Steel, which later became known as Nippon Steel Yahata SC. During his time with the club, he made a significant impact, helping the team win the Emperor's Cup in 1964. In 1965, Yawata Steel became part of the newly formed Japan Soccer League, where Kami played as a defender. Over the course of his career, he appeared in 85 league matches and scored 5 goals. His exceptional performance earned him a spot in the Japan Soccer League Best Eleven in both 1966 and 1967. Kami retired from professional football in 1970.

In addition to his club career, Kami was also a key player for the Japan men's national football team. He made his debut on October 16, 1964, during the Summer Olympics in Tokyo against Ghana. He continued to represent Japan in various international competitions, including the 1966 Asian Games and the qualification rounds for the 1968 Summer Olympics, ultimately playing 15 matches for his country until 1968.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Kami transitioned into coaching, taking over as manager of Nippon Steel in 1980. However, his tenure was challenging, as the club faced relegation to Division 2 for the first time. He resigned in 1983 but returned to manage the team again from 1987 to 1989, contributing to the development of football in Japan.

Legacy

Hisao Kami's contributions to Japanese football, both as a player and a coach, have left a lasting legacy. His recognition as a Best Eleven player highlights his skill and dedication to the sport, making him a respected figure in the history of Japanese football.
