Katsumi Oenoki

Early Life

Katsumi Oenoki was born in Japan and showed an early passion for football. He honed his skills at Shimizu Higashi High School, where he played alongside notable teammates such as Kenta Hasegawa and Takumi Horiike. His talent on the field helped his team secure the national high school championship, setting the stage for his future in football.

Professional Career

After graduating from Waseda University in 1988, Oenoki began his professional career with Yamaha Motors, now known as Júbilo Iwata. He played for the club until 1991 before moving to Shimizu S-Pulse in 1992, a team founded in his hometown as Japan's first professional league, the J1 League, was established. During his time with Shimizu S-Pulse, Oenoki made significant contributions, helping the team win the 1996 J.League Cup and the 1999 J1 League's second stage, as well as the 1999–2000 Asian Cup Winners' Cup. He retired in 2002 after making over 250 league appearances.

International Career

Oenoki also represented the Japan national team, earning five caps between 1989 and 1990. His international debut came on May 5, 1989, in a friendly match against Korea, and he participated in the qualification rounds for the 1990 World Cup.

Coaching Career

Following his playing career, Oenoki transitioned into coaching, starting with Shimizu S-Pulse in 2003. He later managed Waseda University from 2004 to 2007, leading the team to promotions and a runners-up finish in the national intercollegiate championship. In 2008, he returned to Shimizu S-Pulse as a youth team manager and eventually took over as the top team's manager in 2014, though he resigned the following year due to poor performance.
