Kazuo Echigo

Early Life

Kazuo Echigo was born on December 28, 1965, in Mie District, Mie, Japan. He began his journey in football at a young age, showcasing his talent and passion for the sport. After completing high school, he took a significant step in his career by joining Furukawa Electric, which would later become known as JEF United Ichihara, in 1984.

Club Career

Echigo's professional career took off with JEF United Chiba, where he played from 1984 to 1995. During his time with the club, he contributed to their remarkable achievements, including winning the 1985–86 Japan Soccer League and the 1986 JSL Cup. Notably, JEF United Chiba became the first Japanese club to win the Asian Club Championship in 1986. In 1995, he transitioned to Brummell Sendai, later known as Vegalta Sendai, where he continued to play until his retirement in 1999.

National Team Career

Echigo also made his mark on the international stage, debuting for the Japan men's national football team on July 25, 1986, against Syria. He participated in the 1986 Asian Games and was selected for the 1988 Summer Olympics qualifications, where he played six matches and scored one goal, further solidifying his status as a key player for Japan.

Coaching Career

After hanging up his boots, Echigo shifted to coaching, starting with Vegalta Sendai in 2000. He held various coaching roles, including a stint as manager for the reserve team at JEF United Chiba and later returning to Vegalta Sendai to manage the youth team. In 2017, he took charge of the Mynavi Vegalta Sendai Ladies, leading them to a commendable fourth-place finish in the league. In 2019, he was appointed as the manager of the Chinese Taipei women's national football team, where he nearly guided them to their first World Cup appearance since 1991 during the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup.
