Kazuo Saito

Early Life

Kazuo Saito was born on July 27, 1951, in Saitama, Japan. He pursued his education at Hosei University, where he honed his skills in football, setting the stage for a successful career in the sport.

Playing Career

Saito began his professional career in 1974 when he joined Mitsubishi Motors, which later became known as Urawa Red Diamonds. Over his 15-year tenure with the club, he played as a defender, participating in 248 league matches and scoring 3 goals. His club enjoyed significant success during his time, finishing as runners-up for four consecutive years from 1974 to 1977 and winning major titles including the Japan Soccer League, JSL Cup, and Emperor's Cup in 1978. Despite a challenging end to his playing career, with the club relegated in the 1988-89 season, Saito's contributions were recognized as he was selected for the Best Eleven in 1975, 1977, and 1978.

National Team Career

Saito also made his mark on the international stage, debuting for the Japan national team on January 28, 1976, against Bulgaria. He was a regular player during the 1976 Summer Olympics qualification and the 1978 World Cup qualification, and he represented Japan in the 1978 Asian Games. He played a total of 32 matches for the national team until 1984, with his last appearance coming during the 1984 Summer Olympics qualification.

Coaching Career

After retiring from playing in 1989, Saito transitioned into management, taking over as the manager of Mitsubishi Motors. He led the team to victory in Division 2, securing promotion to Division 1. His coaching career continued with stints at Urawa Reds, JEF United Ichihara, and Kawasaki Frontale, showcasing his enduring influence in Japanese football. In 2014, he returned to JEF United Chiba as a caretaker manager, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.
