Kensuke Nagai

Early Life

Kensuke Nagai was born in Japan and spent his early childhood in Ipatinga, Brazil, where he began playing street football at the age of three. After returning to Japan, he continued to develop his skills in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, participating in local elementary and junior high school soccer clubs. His talent was evident early on, leading him to join the Kyushu International University High School club, where he played in the prestigious 85th All Japan High School Soccer Tournament.

Career

Nagai's professional career began at Fukuoka University, where he played for the university club and achieved significant success, winning the 33rd Prime Minister's Cup All Japan College Soccer Tournament in 2009. He made his professional debut with Avispa Fukuoka in J. League Division 2 in 2009 and later played for Vissel Kobe in 2010 as a designated special player. His international career took off when he was named in Japan's squad for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification and made his full international debut on January 6, 2010.

In 2013, Nagai transferred to Standard Liège in the Belgian Pro League but was loaned back to Nagoya Grampus due to limited playing time. He returned to Nagoya on a permanent basis in 2015 and continued to make an impact in the J1 League. Over the years, he has represented Japan at various levels, including the under-20 and under-23 teams, and was part of the squad for the 2012 Olympics. As of 2022, he is back with Nagoya Grampus, contributing to the team's success.

Legacy

Nagai's contributions to Japanese football are notable, having been a top scorer in several tournaments, including the AFC U-19 Championship in 2008 and the Asian Games in 2010. He has also been recognized in the J.League Best XI in 2019 and has won multiple honors with his clubs, including the J.League Cup in 2024 with Nagoya Grampus and the Japanese Super Cup in 2011. His journey from Brazil to becoming a key player for Japan showcases his dedication and talent in the sport.
