Formation and Early History

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk, commonly known as KV Kortrijk, is a Belgian professional football club based in Kortrijk, West Flanders. The club was officially founded in 1971, but its roots trace back to 1901 with the establishment of SC Courtraisien. Over the years, SC Courtraisien merged with FC Courtraisien in 1918, and later adopted the name Koninklijke Kortrijk Sport in 1951. In 1971, a significant merger occurred between Koninklijke Kortrijk Sport and Stade Kortrijk, allowing the new entity to inherit the matricule number 19, a nod to its historical lineage.

Rise and Challenges

KV Kortrijk faced significant challenges in the early 2000s, including a drop to the third division and a bankruptcy in 2001. Despite these setbacks, the club managed to win the third division playoffs but was penalized and did not promote. However, resilience paid off as they promoted to the second division in 2004 and reached the first division by the 2007–08 season. The club's fortunes changed when Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan acquired it for €5 million in May 2015.

Recent Developments

In a dramatic turn of events, KV Kortrijk faced relegation from the Belgian Pro League in May 2025 after a 17-year tenure in the top tier. However, they bounced back quickly, securing promotion back to the Belgian Pro League on April 11, 2026, marking them as the only club to achieve immediate promotion after relegation since KV Mechelen in 2019.

Honours and Legacy

Throughout its history, KV Kortrijk has achieved notable successes, including being runners-up in the Belgian Cup during the 2011–12 season and winning the Belgian Second Division twice in 1905–06 and 2007–08.
