Max Morlock

Early Life

Maximilian Morlock was born in 1925 in Germany, where he began his football journey at Eintracht Nürnberg. His passion for the sport led him to join 1. FC Nürnberg in 1940, where he would become a legendary figure in German football.

Club Career

Morlock made his first-team debut for 1. FC Nürnberg on November 30, 1941, and over the next two decades, he became a cornerstone of the team. He played more than 900 matches and scored approximately 700 goals, showcasing his remarkable talent as a forward. His leadership on the field helped the club secure German championships in 1948 and 1961, as well as a German Cup victory in 1962. Notably, he was the top scorer in the Oberliga Süd for two consecutive seasons, 1950-51 and 1951-52. Even at the age of 38, he contributed significantly during the inaugural season of the Bundesliga in 1963-64.

International Career

Morlock's international career with the West Germany national team began in 1950, and he quickly made his mark. He earned 26 caps and scored 21 goals, playing a pivotal role in the team's success at the 1954 World Cup, where he scored the first goal in the final against Hungary, helping to secure West Germany's first World Cup title. His last appearance for the national team came in December 1958 against Egypt.

Legacy

In recognition of his contributions to football, Morlock was named German Footballer of the Year in 1961. Following his passing in 1994, the square in front of the Frankenstadion was renamed Max-Morlock-Platz in his honor. Although the stadium was temporarily renamed for sponsorship reasons, it was officially designated as Max-Morlock-Stadion in July 2017, ensuring that his legacy endures in the heart of Nuremberg.
