Nelsinho's professional career took off at São Paulo FC, where he played from 1979 to 1992, establishing himself as a reliable defender. He had a brief stint with Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in 1991 before returning to Flamengo for another season in 1990-1991. In 1992, he played for S.C. Corinthians Paulista, marking a significant year in his career. Nelsinho then ventured abroad to play for Kashiwa Reysol in Japan from 1993 to 1995, showcasing his skills on an international stage.

In addition to his club career, Nelsinho represented the Brazil men's national football team from 1987 to 1990, participating in the prestigious 1987 Copa América held in Argentina. His contributions to the national team solidified his status as a notable player in Brazilian football history.
