Formation

Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, commonly known as PSG, was established in 1970 through the merger of Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain. The club quickly made its mark by winning Ligue 2 in its inaugural season, which led to promotion to Ligue 1. However, the early years were tumultuous, culminating in a split in 1972 that saw Paris FC remain in the top flight while PSG was relegated to Division 3. After two consecutive promotions, PSG returned to Ligue 1 in 1974 and began to solidify its presence in French football.

Breakthrough

The 1980s marked a significant era for PSG, as the club captured its first major trophies, including back-to-back Coupe de France titles in 1982 and 1983, and its first Ligue 1 title in 1986. This success was driven by notable players such as Safet Sušić and Luis Fernandez. Following a decline in the late 1980s, a takeover by Canal+ in 1991 revitalized the club, leading to a golden period in the 1990s where PSG won nine trophies and reached five consecutive European semi-finals. The club's second league title came in 1994, alongside the prestigious UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1996.

Modern Era

Entering the 21st century, PSG faced challenges despite having star players like Ronaldinho and Pauleta. The club managed to secure five more trophies, including three Coupe de France titles, but struggled with financial instability and management issues. In 2006, Canal+ sold PSG to Colony Capital, which did not improve the situation. Despite these challenges, PSG has remained a prominent force in French football, known for its passionate fanbase and fierce rivalries, particularly with Olympique de Marseille in the famous Le Classique.
