Pedro Cea

Early Life

José Pedro Cea Urriza was born in Redondela, Spain, in 1900. He later moved to Uruguay, where he would become a prominent figure in football, both as a player and a coach. Cea's football journey began in the early 1920s, and he quickly made a name for himself on the pitch.

Playing Career

Cea's club career took off at Centro Atletico Lito, where he played from 1922 to 1927. He then had a brief stint at C.A. Bella Vista in 1928 before joining Club Nacional de Football, where he played from 1929 to 1934. During his time at Nacional, he won several Uruguayan championships, solidifying his reputation as a skilled forward and midfielder.

On the international stage, Cea debuted for the Uruguay national team in November 1923. He was a key player in Uruguay's success at the South American Championships in 1923 and 1924, and he also won gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. Cea's most notable achievement came during the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, where he scored the equalizing goal in the final against Argentina, helping Uruguay secure a 4-2 victory. He finished the tournament as the leading goalscorer and was awarded the Silver Boot.

Managerial Career and Legacy

After retiring as a player, Cea transitioned into coaching, managing the Uruguay national team in 1941 and 1942. Under his leadership, the team won the 1942 South American Championship. Cea's contributions to football were recognized with his selection to the 1930 FIFA World Cup All-Star Team, and he remains a celebrated figure in Uruguayan football history, remembered for his skill, leadership, and significant achievements both on and off the field.
