Early Life and Development

Robin Gerardus Petrus Roefs, born in 2003, is a promising Dutch professional footballer who has made significant strides in his career as a goalkeeper. He began his football journey in the youth squads of VV Heeswijk, where he showcased his talent and was scouted by NEC in 2014. Roefs honed his skills in the youth system at NEC, eventually transitioning to training goalkeepers for VV Heeswijk during the 2021–22 season.

Club Career

Roefs extended his contract with NEC until 2028 in September 2023, marking a pivotal moment in his career. He made his professional debut later that month in a 3–0 victory against Utrecht, stepping in as a substitute for the injured Jasper Cillessen. Following this, he made his first start in a match against Vitesse, although the team faced a 3–1 defeat. In May 2024, Roefs expressed a desire for more playtime, hinting at a potential exit from NEC. His career took a significant turn when he signed with Premier League club Sunderland A.F.C. on 1 August 2025. He made an impressive debut for Sunderland, keeping a clean sheet in a 3–0 win over West Ham United on 16 August 2025, and later showcased his skills in a penalty shootout against Everton in the FA Cup.

International Career

Roefs's talent did not go unnoticed at the national level. He received his first call-up to the senior Netherlands squad on 29 August 2025 and made his debut on 3 June 2026 against Algeria. Despite the team's surprising loss, Roefs's performance was a testament to his potential. He was also named in the Netherlands' squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a significant milestone in his international career.

Legacy and Recognition

Roefs has already begun to earn recognition for his performances, being named in the Eredivisie Team of the Month twice in 2025. As he continues to develop his skills and gain experience, he is poised to become a key player for both his club and country in the coming years.
