Ryuzo Hiraki

Early Life

Ryuzo Hiraki was born on October 7, 1931, in Sakai, Japan. He pursued his education at Kwansei Gakuin University, where he developed his passion for football, eventually leading him to join the national team.

Playing Career

Hiraki began his professional career in 1957 with Yuasa Batteries before moving to Furukawa Electric in 1958. During his time at Furukawa Electric, he contributed to the team's success, helping them win the Emperor's Cup in 1960, 1961, and 1964. He played as a defender and was part of the inaugural Japan Soccer League in 1965, where he made six appearances before retiring in 1966.

National Team Contributions

Hiraki's international career began in March 1954 when he was selected for the Japan national team for the World Cup qualification, making his debut against South Korea. He represented Japan in the 1956 Summer Olympics and participated in the Asian Games in 1954, 1958, and 1962. Notably, he was appointed captain for the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, although an injury prevented him from playing. By the time he retired from international football, he had played 30 matches and scored one goal for Japan.

Coaching Career and Legacy

Transitioning into coaching, Hiraki became a playing manager for Furukawa Electric in 1962 and later served as a coach for the Japan national team and the U-20 national team. He played a significant role in leading Japan to a Bronze Medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. In 2005, he was inducted into the Japan Football Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the sport. Hiraki passed away on January 2, 2009, at the age of 77 due to pneumonia, leaving behind a legacy as a player and coach in Japanese football.
