Formation

Sociedade Deportiva Compostela, commonly known as SD Compostela, is a Galician football team based in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain. The club was originally founded in 1928 as Compostela Foot-ball Club but ceased operations in 1946. A new team was established on June 26, 1962, named Sociedad Recreativa Compostela, which later merged with Club Arenal on October 28, 1962, to become Sociedad Deportiva Compostela. This merger marked the beginning of a new era for the club, which has since become a staple in Galician football.

Career Progression

Throughout the years, SD Compostela has experienced various ups and downs in its competitive journey. The 1970s were pivotal as the team transitioned through different levels, including the Tercera División and the newly formed Segunda División B. The club achieved its first promotion to a semi-national level in 1977, although it only lasted one season. A significant moment came in 1991 when the team secured its first-ever promotion to the Segunda División, celebrated by a thrilling 3-1 victory against CD Badajoz in front of a packed crowd at Estadio Municipal Santa Isabel.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite facing relegation in 1986 and the subsequent controversies surrounding its then-president, Francisco Steppe, SD Compostela managed to restructure and regain its competitive edge. By 1990, the club returned to the third level of Spanish football, setting the stage for future successes. The club's resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity have been hallmarks of its history, contributing to its enduring legacy in Spanish football.
