Shigeharu Ueki

Early Life

Shigeharu Ueki was born on September 13, 1954, in Kawasaki, Japan. He pursued his education at Nihon University, where he developed his passion for football, setting the stage for a successful career in the sport.

Playing Career

Ueki began his professional football journey in 1977 when he joined Fujita Industries, which later became known as Shonan Bellmare. During his time with the club, he made a significant impact, helping the team secure league championships in 1977, 1979, and 1981, as well as winning the Emperor's Cup in both 1977 and 1979. Over the course of his playing career, he appeared in 144 league matches and scored 16 goals. Ueki also had a brief stint with the Japan national team, making his debut on July 13, 1979, in a match against Singapore.

Coaching Career

After retiring from professional play in 1988, Ueki transitioned into coaching, starting at his former club, Fujita Industries. He took over as manager in November 1995, leading the team to victory in the Asian Cup Winners' Cup. Ueki continued to manage various clubs, including Montedio Yamagata and Thespa Gunma, where he achieved notable success, including promoting Thespa Gunma to the J2 League in 2004. His coaching career spanned several years, showcasing his dedication to developing football in Japan.
