Viktor Onopko

Early Life

Viktor Savelyevich Onopko was born in Voroshilovgrad, now known as Luhansk, in the Soviet Union. He grew up in a time of significant change, as the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, leading him to acquire both Ukrainian and Russian citizenships. This duality would later influence his football career, particularly in his choice of national representation.

Career

Onopko's professional football career began in 1986, and he quickly made a name for himself as a talented defender. He played for several clubs, including FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Spartak Moscow, and Real Oviedo, showcasing his skills in both the Russian and Spanish leagues. His international career was equally impressive; he represented the Soviet Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the Russia national team, earning 109 caps and participating in major tournaments like the 1994 and 2002 FIFA World Cups and the 1996 UEFA European Championship. After retiring from playing in 2005, Onopko transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant coach for CSKA Moscow for 11 years before joining the Russia national team as an assistant manager in 2021.

Viktor Onopko is not only remembered for his contributions on the field but also for his leadership off it. He was part of the Russia squad that won the 2009 Legends Cup, further solidifying his legacy in Russian football.
