Early Life

Yasutaro Matsuki was born on November 28, 1957, in Chuo, Tokyo. His journey into the world of football began in his youth, where he developed a passion for the sport that would shape his future.

Playing Career

Matsuki joined the Yomiuri football club in 1973, starting his professional career in the Japan Soccer League Division 2. His talent quickly shone through, and by 1978, Yomiuri was promoted to Division 1. Over the years, Matsuki became a key player and captain, leading the team during a golden era that saw them win the Japan Soccer League three times, the JSL Cup twice, and the Emperor's Cup three times. He played a total of 269 games and scored 9 goals before retiring in 1990. His contributions to the team earned him a spot in the Best Eleven three times.

National Team and Coaching Career

Matsuki's prowess on the field led to his selection for the Japan national team, where he made his debut in April 1984 during the Olympic qualification matches. He played 11 games for Japan until 1986, including appearances in the World Cup qualification and the Asian Games. After retiring as a player, Matsuki transitioned into coaching, starting with Yomiuri in 1990. He became the manager in 1993, leading the team to significant victories in the J.League Division 1 and J.League Cup, earning the Best Manager award for two consecutive years. He later managed Cerezo Osaka and returned to Tokyo Verdy, although his second stint ended in 2001 when he was sacked mid-season.
