Álvaro Fernández

Early career

Born in Ferrol, Carreras started his career with Galicia de Caranza, before joining his hometown club Racing de Ferrol in 2007. During his time with the club, he played as a forward, scoring 100 goals in a season in the youth ranks. He joined Deportivo de La Coruña's youth ranks in 2012, where he was converted to a left-back, before moving to Real Madrid U13 in 2017.

Manchester United

Carreras signed for Premier League club Manchester United from Real Madrid in September 2020 on a four-year contract, amid interest from other European clubs such as Barcelona and Manchester City. He began training with the first team during the early stages of the 2021–22 season. Carreras was a regular for the under-23 team in his first season at Manchester United, making 20 league appearances and one in the EFL Trophy, as well as seven for the under-18s, and two in the FA Youth Cup. He then played 21 times in the league in 2021–22, all as a starter, as well as playing in all three EFL Trophy matches and six of the seven in the UEFA Youth League. He received his first call-up to the Manchester United first team in April 2022, when he was named on the bench for the Premier League match at home to Chelsea. He was also named on the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion. On 11 May 2022, Carreras was named Manchester United's U23 Player of the Year. He departed the club in 2024 before making his debut for the senior team.

Carreras has played youth international football for Spain at under-19 and under-21 levels. He made his debut for the under-19 team on 26 October 2021, when he started in a friendly match against Israel.

Born in Arnedo, La Rioja, Fernández was invited to play for Real Sociedad in several youth tournaments before signing for CA Osasuna aged 15. He made his senior debut with the reserves on 12 April 2015, starting in a 1–1 away draw against CD Izarra in the Tercera División. On 25 September 2016 Fernández made his La Liga debut, coming on as a second-half substitute for the injured Mario Fernández in a 3–1 loss at Villarreal CF. It was his maiden appearance for the Osasuna first team, which suffered relegation as dead last. On 11 July 2017, Fernández signed a three-year deal with Ligue 1 side AS Monaco FC. After only appearing with the reserve team, he returned to Spain on 7 August 2018, after agreeing to a one-year loan deal with Extremadura UD. On 29 June 2019, Fernández left Monaco and agreed to a three-year contract with SD Huesca, newly relegated to the second division. He was a regular starter during the season as the club returned to the top tier at first attempt. On 17 August 2021, Premier League club Brentford announced the signing of Fernández on a one year loan-deal, with the option to make the move permanent at the end of the 2021–22 season. On 31 August of the following year, he moved to RCD Espanyol in the top tier, also in a temporary deal. On 13 August 2024, Fernández signed a one-year contract with Sevilla FC in the top tier. Fernández represented Spain at several youth levels up to the under-21s, being the starting goalkeeper in the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship (a namesake in the same position, the slightly younger Álvaro Fernández Calvo, was also selected during the same period). Due to the isolation of some national team players following the positive COVID-19 test of Sergio Busquets, Spain's under-21 squad were called up for the senior team's international friendly against Lithuania on 8 June 2021. Fernández made his senior debut in the match, which ended in a 4–0 win; by doing so, he became the first Huesca player to appear for the Spain national team in the club's entire history.

Fernández began his career with Atenas de San Carlos. His performances for Atenas led him to sign for Montevideo Wanderers in 2007. In his one season with Wanderers Fernández appeared in 27 league matches scoring 1 goal. In 2008, he joined Mexican side Puebla before returning to Uruguay to play for top side Nacional. In the 2009 Copa Libertadores Second Stage, Fernández scored a goal against Club Nacional of Paraguay and River Plate. While at Nacional Fernández scored several key goals in helping his side capture the 2008–09 league title. He was then loaned out to Portuguese side Vitória in 2009. This was his first club experience outside of the Americas. In 2010, he was again loaned out to Universidad de Chile. During his stay at the club, he scored a goal in a 3–2 win at the Maracanã against Brazilian club Flamengo in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Copa Libertadores. On 21 July 2010, rumors began circulating that Fernández had been transferred to the Seattle Sounders FC. On 29 July, the Sounders announced the signing was complete. Fernández became the third Designated Player in the team's history. He made his first appearance for the Sounders on 31 July as a substitute in a 1–0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes. Originally known as Álvaro Fernández, he later adopted his maternal surname, Carreras, in his career. However, Manchester United listed him under his paternal surname, Fernández, for the group stage of the 2021–22 UEFA Youth League. According to Álvaro, this decision made "both his mother and father happy".

During the week of 6 September 2010, Fernández's wife gave birth to a baby boy, whom they named Bobby Valentino. Fernández received a U.S. green card in March 2012. This qualifies him as a domestic player for MLS roster purposes.
