Formation

Aberdeen Football Club was established in 1903 through a merger of three local clubs: Aberdeen, Victoria United, and Orion. The club played its inaugural match on August 15, 1903, ending in a 1–1 draw against Stenhousemuir. In its first season, Aberdeen secured victory in the Aberdeenshire Cup and finished third in the Northern League. The following year, they were elected to the Second Division of the Scottish League, and by 1904, they had progressed to the newly expanded First Division, where they have remained ever since.

Early Success and Development

The early years saw Aberdeen making significant strides, including a Scottish Cup semi-final appearance in 1908 and another in 1911. Notably, during the 1910-11 season, the club achieved its first victories over the Old Firm teams, Celtic and Rangers, and briefly led the league standings. However, the impact of World War I forced the club to suspend competitive football by 1917.

Achievements and Legacy

Aberdeen FC has a rich history of success, having won four Scottish league titles, eight Scottish Cups, and six Scottish League Cups. They are particularly distinguished as the only Scottish team to have won two European trophies, claiming the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup in 1983. In recognition of their contributions to the city, the club was awarded the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen on December 16, 2022, following a unanimous vote by the Aberdeen City Council.
