Iwata's football career took off when she was selected for the Japan women's national football team in June 1981 at the age of 17. She made her debut in the 1981 AFC Championship against Thailand on June 11, marking a significant milestone in her young career. During this championship, she played in two matches, showcasing her skills on an international stage. However, the tournament was challenging for the Japanese team, culminating in a historic defeat against Italy, where Japan lost 0-9, the greatest defeat in the team's history. Despite this setback, Iwata played a total of three games for Japan in 1981, contributing to the development of women's football in the country.
