Atsushi Uchiyama

Early Life

Atsushi Uchiyama was born on June 29, 1959, in Shizuoka, Japan. He pursued his education at Kokushikan University, where he honed his skills in football, setting the stage for his future career in the sport.

Playing Career

Uchiyama began his professional career in 1982 when he joined Yamaha Motors, a club in the Japan Soccer League Division 2. His impact was immediate, as he helped the team secure the championship in his first year, leading to their promotion to Division 1. Over the next decade, Uchiyama played a pivotal role in the club's success, contributing to their victory in the Emperor's Cup and winning the league championship in the 1987-88 season. Throughout his time at Yamaha Motors, he made 195 appearances and scored 18 goals before retiring in 1992.

International Career

On September 30, 1984, Uchiyama made his debut for the Japan national team in a match against South Korea. He participated in the 1986 World Cup qualification, representing Japan in a total of 2 international matches until 1986.

Coaching Career

Following his retirement as a player, Uchiyama transitioned into coaching, starting at Yamaha Motors in 1992. He served as a coach for the top team and managed the youth team before becoming the head coach of the top team in September 2007. Although his tenure was short-lived, he later took on the role of manager for the Japan U-20 national team in 2015. Under his guidance, the U-20 team won the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship, marking a significant achievement as they qualified for the U-20 World Cup for the first time in a decade. Uchiyama resigned after the tournament in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of development in Japanese football.
