Formation

AZ Alkmaar, officially known as Alkmaar Zaanstreek, was founded on May 10, 1967, through the merger of two local clubs: Alkmaar '54 and FC Zaanstreek. Alkmaar '54 had a rich history, having been established in April 1954 and playing the first professional match in the Netherlands on August 14, 1954, where they triumphed over Venlo '54 with a score of 3-0. FC Zaanstreek, originally known as Kooger Football Club (KFC), had been competing since 1910 and transitioned to professional status in 1955. The merger aimed to create a stronger football presence in the region, and the newly formed club adopted the name AZ '67.

Early Years and Development

In its early years, AZ played in the Eerste Divisie, where they achieved notable success by winning the league in the 1960-61 season, which allowed them to compete in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football.
