Early Life
Danny Sean Guthrie was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in 1987. He attended Thomas Telford School in Telford from the age of 11 until he was 16, where he was part of a highly successful football squad that won numerous County Cups and reached the semi-finals of the English School's National Football Tournament. At 16, he moved to Merseyside to pursue his football career at Liverpool, having previously been a member of the Manchester United youth academy.
Career
Guthrie began his professional career at Liverpool F.C., making his senior debut in a pre-season friendly in 2006. He made his competitive debut in the Football League Cup later that year and played his first Premier League match in November 2006. Seeking more playing time, he went on loan to Southampton in March 2007, followed by a loan to Bolton Wanderers for the 2007-08 season, where he scored his first professional goal. After his time at Liverpool, he played for several clubs, including Newcastle United F.C. from 2008 to 2012, Reading F.C. from 2012 to 2015, and Fulham F.C. for a brief period in 2015. He later joined Blackburn Rovers F.C. in 2015, continuing his career in the Premier League and Football League.
Guthrie also represented England at the youth level, playing for the under-16 and under-17 teams, where he made four appearances and scored once in 2003.
Personal Life
In recent years, Guthrie faced significant financial challenges. In May 2019, he borrowed £75,000 from a friend to cover expenses, promising to repay it after selling a home. After selling the property for £160,000 in 2022, he withdrew cash to settle gambling debts exceeding £120,000. Following a series of court actions, he filed for bankruptcy in June 2022, accumulating unpaid debts of £195,000 and subsequently entering a six-year Bankruptcy Undertaking Order.
