Formation

D.C. United is a professional soccer club based in Washington, D.C., established as part of the formation of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States. The club was selected on June 15, 1994, from twenty-two applicants to be one of the league's first franchises, reflecting a commitment to professional soccer in the country ahead of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The name "D.C. United" was chosen to echo the naming conventions of prominent European clubs and to signify its status as the capital's team.
