Formation

Excelsior Rotterdam, commonly known as Excelsior, is a professional football club based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, founded on 23 July 1902. The club was established by a group of friends in the Kralingen district, initially playing on the grounds of the historic Woudesteyn estate. As one of the first working-class clubs in the Netherlands, Excelsior emerged during a time when football was predominantly an elite sport, marking its place in the history of Dutch football.

Early Successes

Excelsior's journey in competitive football began with their promotion to the Eerste Klasse in the 1945-46 season, the highest tier before the advent of professional football in 1954. Their first major match, played against VUC at De Kuip, attracted an impressive crowd of 52,000 spectators. Although they faced relegation shortly after, Excelsior managed to return to the top tier in the 1951-52 season. The club has since experienced several promotions and relegations, winning the Eerste Divisie championship three times in 1974, 1979, and 2006.

Honours and Legacy

Excelsior has a rich history of competition, including a notable appearance in the KNVB Cup final during the 1929-30 season, where they were narrowly defeated by local rivals Feyenoord. The club's most significant pre-war achievement was winning the Zilveren Bal trophy with a remarkable 5-0 victory over Feyenoord. Over the years, Excelsior has promoted to the Eredivisie multiple times, showcasing their resilience and commitment to the sport, despite often facing relegation soon after. Today, they continue to compete in the Eerste Divisie, striving to reclaim their place in the top tier of Dutch football.
