FC Twente

Formation

Football Club Twente, commonly referred to as FC Twente, was established in 1965 through the merger of two local clubs, Enschedese Boys and Sportclub Enschede, the latter having been crowned Dutch champions in 1926. The club quickly made its mark in Dutch football, with early successes under the guidance of innovative coach Kees Rijvers. In the years following its formation, Twente consistently finished in the top ranks of the Eredivisie, showcasing local talents like Epi Drost and Eddy Achterberg.

Breakthrough

The pinnacle of FC Twente's early achievements came during the 1973-74 season when they narrowly missed out on the Eredivisie title, finishing second to Feyenoord. This strong performance earned them a spot in the UEFA Cup, where they made an impressive run to the final in 1975, ultimately losing to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The club's first major trophy was the KNVB Cup, won in 1977 after a decisive 3-0 victory over PEC Zwolle.

Challenges and Resurgence

Despite a successful start, the 1980s brought challenges, including relegation to the Eerste Divisie in 1983. However, FC Twente demonstrated resilience, returning to the top flight and gradually rebuilding its reputation. The club's fortunes improved significantly in the late 2000s, culminating in their first Eredivisie title in the 2009-10 season, alongside multiple KNVB Cup victories and Johan Cruyff Shield wins, solidifying their status in Dutch football history.
