GAIS

Formation and Early Success

Göteborgs Atlet- och Idrottssällskap, commonly known as GAIS, was founded on March 11, 1894, at Edlunds Café in Gothenburg, Sweden. Initially established for patriotic purposes and to promote various sports, the club's football department was formed in 1897, with their first official match occurring in 1903 against local rivals Örgryte IS. GAIS made its debut in the highest league, Svenska Serien, during the 1915/16 season, finishing fourth. The club achieved its first national championship in 1919, defeating Djurgårdens IF in the finals, and repeated this success in 1922 against Hammarby IF. GAIS also won the inaugural season of Allsvenskan in 1924/25, finishing ahead of local rivals IFK Göteborg, and continued to dominate by winning the league again in 1926/27 and 1930/31.

Decline and Resurgence

The 1930s marked a decline for GAIS as they gradually lost their dominance in Allsvenskan, culminating in relegation in 1938. After spending three years in the second division, the club returned to Allsvenskan for the 1941–42 season, finishing second. In 1942, GAIS won the Svenska Cupen for the first time, a title they have yet to reclaim. The club's history is characterized by its passionate fanbase, who affectionately refer to them as Grönsvart (green-black) and Makrillarna, reflecting their traditional colors of green and black striped shirts with white shorts.

GAIS continues to be a significant part of Gothenburg's sports culture, playing their home games at Gamla Ullevi and competing in various leagues, including Ettan Södra, Superettan, and Allsvenskan.
