During his time with the club, he played as a midfielder and contributed to the team's success, helping them secure the league championship in 1971, 1974, and 1975. Additionally, he was part of the squad that won the Emperor's Cup in 1974. Over his career at Yanmar Diesel, Kobayashi made 92 appearances and scored 7 goals, showcasing his skills on the field. His outstanding performances earned him a spot in the Japan Soccer League Best Eleven in both 1974 and 1975.

Kobayashi also had a brief stint with the Japan men's national football team, debuting on July 16, 1972, against Sri Lanka. He played a total of 3 matches for Japan in that year, marking a significant milestone in his international career.
