Kazuya Maekawa

Early Life

Kazuya Maekawa is a former Japanese football player known for his role as a goalkeeper. He was educated at Hirado High School, where he began to develop his skills in football, setting the stage for his future career in the sport.

Club Career

Maekawa's professional journey began in 1986 when he joined the Japan Soccer League side Mazda, which later became Sanfrecce Hiroshima when Japan's first professional league, the J1 League, was established in 1993. He quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper for the club, a position he held since 1989, despite facing challenges with injuries. Notably, he had a trial with Manchester United in April 1990, showcasing his talent on an international stage. After undergoing shoulder surgery in 1998, he found his position taken by Takashi Shimoda, who continued to perform well, leading to Maekawa's transfer to Oita Trinita in 2000. He played for Oita Trinita until his retirement in 2001.

National Team Career

On the international front, Maekawa was capped 17 times for the Japan national team between 1992 and 1996. His debut came in a friendly match against Wales on June 7, 1992. He was part of the squad that won the 1992 Asian Cup, stepping up to play in crucial matches after the first-choice goalkeeper was sent off during the semi-final against China.

Post-Retirement

After retiring from professional play, Maekawa remained involved in football, working in marketing, operations, and development at Oita Trinita until 2005. He currently serves as a coach at the Sanfrecce Tsuneishi Soccer School, contributing to the development of young football talent in Japan. His legacy continues through his son, Daiya Maekawa, who is also pursuing a career in football.
