Kenji Honnami

Early Life

Kenji Honnami was born on June 23, 1964, in Hirakata, Japan. He pursued his education at Osaka University of Commerce, where he laid the foundation for his future career in football.

Career

Honnami began his professional journey in football by joining Matsushita Electric, which later became known as Gamba Osaka, in 1986. During his time with the club, he contributed to their success, including winning the Emperor's Cup in 1990. As the Japan Soccer League transitioned to the J1 League in 1992, Honnami established himself as a regular goalkeeper. However, by 1996, he faced challenges that limited his playing time. In 1997, he transferred to Verdy Kawasaki, which was later renamed Tokyo Verdy. Initially serving as a reserve goalkeeper, he became the team's starting goalkeeper in 1999 and continued to play until his retirement at the end of the 2001 season alongside his rival, Shinkichi Kikuchi.

Honnami also had a brief international career, debuting for the Japan national team on May 29, 1994, in a match against France. He represented Japan in three games during that year.

Coaching Career

After retiring from professional play, Honnami transitioned into coaching. In August 2012, he took on the role of manager for Speranza FC Osaka-Takatsuki, a club in the L.League. He managed the team until the end of the 2016 season, marking a new chapter in his football journey as he shifted from player to mentor.
