Masakuni Yamamoto

Early Life

Masakuni Yamamoto was born on April 4, 1958, in Numazu, Japan. He pursued his education at Kokushikan University, where he honed his skills in football, setting the stage for his future career in the sport.

Playing Career

Yamamoto began his professional career in 1981 when he joined Yamaha Motors, which later became known as Júbilo Iwata. His first season was challenging, as the team finished at the bottom of the league and faced relegation to Division 2. However, the following year, Yamamoto and his teammates turned their fortunes around, winning the championship and earning promotion to Division 1. During his time with the club, he played 109 matches and scored 3 goals before retiring in 1987. Additionally, he represented the Japan men's national football team, earning 4 caps between 1980 and 1981, including a debut during the 1982 World Cup qualification against China.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Yamamoto transitioned into coaching, starting at Yamaha Motors in 1987. He took on various roles, including managing the Japan U-20 national team during the 1997 World Youth Championship. In 1998, he joined the Japan national team as a coach under manager Philippe Troussier. Following the 2002 World Cup, he became the manager of the Japan U-23 national team, leading them at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He returned to Júbilo Iwata in November 2004 as a manager but resigned in June 2006, marking the end of a significant chapter in his coaching career.
