Formation

Melbourne City FC, an Australian professional soccer club, was established in the South-Eastern region of Melbourne, Victoria. The club competes in the A-League Men, the premier division of soccer in Australia, under the auspices of the Australian Professional Leagues (APL). The journey to its formation began after the dissolution of the National Soccer League in 2003, which led to the creation of a new national competition. Despite initial plans for multiple Melbourne teams, the Football Federation Australia (FFA) awarded the sole license to Melbourne Victory in 2004, leading to a five-year moratorium on new teams in the area.

Early Years

In 2008, businessman Colin DeLutis expressed interest in establishing a second Melbourne A-League side, proposing the name 'Melbourne City'. However, this bid was ultimately unsuccessful, and the team that would become Melbourne City FC was initially known as Melbourne Heart. The club officially entered the league in the 2010-11 season, marking the beginning of its competitive journey.

Achievements

Melbourne City FC has made significant strides in Australian soccer, achieving notable success in domestic competitions. The club has won the A-League Men Championship twice, in 2021 and 2025, and has been a runner-up three times. Additionally, they have claimed the A-League Men Premiership three times and won the Australia Cup in 2016.
