Michael Fitzgerald

Early Life

Michael James Fitzgerald was born in 1988 in New Zealand and grew up in Auckland, where he attended St Peter's College from 1999 to 2005. It was during his time at this school that he developed a passion for football, participating in the school's football academy and honing his skills on the pitch. Fitzgerald is also known to be the brother of Isaac Fitzgerald.

Career

Fitzgerald's professional football career began in 2008 when he joined Albirex Niigata, a club in Japan's J1 League. He quickly made a name for himself as a centre-back and defender. Over the years, he played for several clubs, including Zweigen Kanazawa and V-Varen Nagasaki, where he made his debut on March 31, 2013. After a brief stint with Kawasaki Frontale, he returned to Albirex Niigata in 2019, where he played a pivotal role in helping the team secure promotion to the J1 League in 2022, culminating in their championship win in the J2 League.

Fitzgerald also had a brief international career with the New Zealand men's national football team, making his debut in 2011. However, in 2013, he became a naturalized Japanese citizen, which meant he could no longer represent New Zealand. This transition marked a significant turning point in his career, as he embraced his new identity while continuing to excel in Japanese football.
