Career
Kato began his professional football journey in 1976 when he joined Mitsubishi Motors, now known as Urawa Red Diamonds. During his time with the club, he made a significant impact, helping the team secure a remarkable achievement in 1978 by winning all three major titles in Japan: the Japan Soccer League, the JSL Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. Kato continued to contribute to the club's success, adding another Emperor's Cup in 1980, the JSL Cup in 1981, and the Japan Soccer League title in 1982. Over his career with Mitsubishi Motors, he played 61 league games and scored 7 goals before retiring in 1983.
In addition to his club success, Kato also represented the Japan men's national football team, making his debut on August 23, 1979, in a match against North Korea. His contributions to the national team, although brief, were part of a pivotal time in Japanese football history.
