Mitsuru Nagata

Early Life

Mitsuru Nagata was born on April 6, 1983, in Shizuoka, Japan. He developed a passion for football at a young age, which led him to graduate from Shizuoka Gakuen High School, a notable institution for nurturing football talent.

Career

Nagata began his professional career in 2002 when he joined Kashiwa Reysol in the J1 League. He made his debut in September of that year and quickly established himself as a regular center back by 2003. However, his career faced a setback in March 2005 when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury. After a long recovery, he returned to the pitch in November, but Reysol was relegated to the J2 League at the end of the season.

In 2006, he transferred to Albirex Niigata, where he initially struggled with injuries but became a key player from 2007 onwards, forming a solid defensive partnership with Mitsuru Chiyotanda and Kazuhiko Chiba. In 2011, Nagata moved to Urawa Red Diamonds, where he continued to play as a center back until injuries limited his appearances from 2013. He later joined Tokyo Verdy in 2017 and played there for two seasons before retiring in 2018. In 2019, he signed with Tokyo United FC, marking the final chapter of his playing career.

National Team Career

Nagata also represented Japan at various levels, including the Japan national under-20 team, where he participated in the 2003 World Youth Championship. He made his senior debut on September 2, 2010, in a friendly against Guatemala and was part of the squad for the 2011 Asian Cup, contributing to Japan's victory in the tournament. He earned a total of two caps for the national team until 2011.

Legacy

Throughout his career, Nagata was recognized for his defensive skills and was named to the AFC U-19 Championship Best Eleven in 2002. He won the AFC Asian Cup with Japan in 2011 and the J.League Cup with Urawa Reds in 2016, leaving a lasting impact on Japanese football.
