Rio Ave Futebol Clube, commonly known as Rio Ave, was founded in 1939 in Vila do Conde, Portugal. The club quickly earned the nickname "Rio Grande" (Big River) due to its namesake, the Ave River, which flows through the town and into the Atlantic Ocean.
