Formation

Royal Antwerp Football Club, commonly known as Royal Antwerp or simply Antwerp, is a professional football club based in Antwerp, Belgium. Founded in 1880 by British workers, it is recognized as the oldest football club in Belgium. Initially, the club focused on cricket and athletic activities, but it established its football division in 1887. Royal Antwerp was the first club to register with the Royal Belgian Football Association in 1895, receiving matricule number one when matricule numbers were introduced in 1926.

Early Rivalries and Achievements

In the early 1900s, Royal Antwerp faced a significant challenge when many of its players left to join the newly formed Beerschot A.C., sparking a long-standing rivalry. Despite this setback, the club achieved notable success, including reaching the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1993, where they faced Parma at Wembley Stadium. Although they lost 3-1, this marked a significant moment in the club's history as they became the most recent Belgian team to reach a European final.

Legacy and Partnerships

Royal Antwerp has a rich legacy, having won the Challenge International du Nord twice in 1902 and 1906, and being runners-up in the 1992-93 European Cup Winners' Cup. The club also had a long-term partnership with Manchester United from 1998 to 2015, allowing young players to gain first-team experience through loans. This partnership was particularly beneficial for players needing European work permits, exemplified by Chinese international Dong Fangzhuo, who was loaned to Antwerp to navigate work permit issues before joining United.
